Kyiv Historic Sites

Many places in the capital are connected with its history. Kyiv is famous for its Golden Gates, Askold’s Grave, Church of St. Andrew, Shevchenko Memorial. One of the unique buildings is Kyivo-Pecherska Lavra. It stands on the green hill above the Dnieper. More than 80 buildings were constructed on its territory during 900 years of the monastery’s existence.

St. Sophia’s Cathedral has lived many buildings of Ancient Rus. It was founded in 1037 during the reign of Yaroslav the Wise. The buildings are in the style of Ukrainian baroque. The cathedral itself and the ancient mosaic decorations in the cathedral are of unique value.

Kyiv is an educational and scientific centre. It has a lot of universities, academies and colleges. There are a lot of museums, theatres. One of the most famous museums is the State Historical Museum of Ukraine. There are more than 50,000 exhibits on display. The Museum of the History of Ukraine in World War II is located on the Dnieper hills. It offers both indoor and outdoor displays of military history and equipment.

London is the capital of Great Britain. It is a beautiful big old city. London is 46 kilometres from North to South and 58 kilometres from East to West. The population of London is 8 million people. London stands on the River Thames.

I know there are 8 tunnels under the Thames. There are 27 bridges over the river. Tower Bridge is the most famous. Near it, there is the Tower of London. You can see Beefeaters there. They are the guards at the Tower of London. The Tower of London is very old. It was built in the 11th century. It is a big castle with a lot of buildings inside it. One building was a prison. A lot of people lost their heads there. People called it the Bloody Tower. Now it is a museum. There is the Jewel Room in the Tower of London, too. You can see the Crown jewels of all the kings and queens of England. They are very beautiful.

The British museum is very famous too. It has the biggest library in the world. In London you can see a big clock. It is Big Ben. It’s famous in England and all around the world. In the centre of London there is Piccadilly Circus. There are a lot of famous shops in Piccadilly Circus.

There are many churches in London. One of the biggest is Westminster Abbey. It’s the church where kings and queens of England get married.

A very interesting place in the British capital is the London Zoo. You can see millions of animals there. They are nice and funny. Children like to visit the Touch Centre in the zoo. You can touch and stroke animals there. It’s great!

The red double-decker bus is a symbol of the city. The oldest metro in the world, called Tube, is here in London, too.

London is a wonderful city and I want to visit it.
